Apart from the Penny and Tegut in the Neustädter Tor there are even more supermarkets found all over the city. The most known ones are Alid, Lidl, Rewe and Edeka.

If you prefer your groceries from the region or just as fresh as possible, the weekly market is your place to be. It takes place Wednesday and Saturday mornings 7-14am on the parking lots from Brandplatz to Lindenplatz.
You can buy all kinds of bread and bakery products, eggs, poultry, venison, coldmeat, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, nuts, pulse, herbs, teas, honey, flowers and plants.

Where to eat in Giessen

Giessen offers a lot of different nice places to have lunch or dinner when you're not in the mood to cook ones. Apart from the typical fast food shops like McDonalds, Subway (city center), Burger King, KFC (near Philosophikum) and Döner Kebab in the Döner Triangle, Giessen also has a lot of nice Restaurants, most of them even not that expensive, perfect for Erasmus students! If you're looking for a cheap meal you can also go to one of the many cafés and canteens, every university campus has at least one place to eat. The biggest canteen is called "Große Mensa" (big canteen) and is located on the Philosophikum I Campus.
